Makes sense. Why they’re not marketing more towards their growing Linux-based buyers is beyond me.
Not growing fast enough, I assume.
wow. linux. I think this is the first true steamdeck competitor I have heard of since windows is a non starter.
As a legion go user. The windows 11 integration is quite buggy. The issue is that i need windows for my setup to work. The steam deck was not able to do all i’m doing right now with the go.
Which Windows-only apps do you need to use ? Maybe we can help you out.
I tried writing this comment for about 3 and a half hours and every part of my life i rethink to integrate linux just doesn’t work. I was about to end with fuck linux. I didn’t want the pain and all the bullshit i would have to deal with but i guess i could deal with a bit of pain and bullshit in my entertainment system after all. Let’s say i want to put linux on my legion go. What are the steps to get it up and running with all the pilots? Clearly the legion space software that controlls and updates everything automatically wouldn’t work. After that it’s my biggest pain right now. How tf can i connect my VR headset to it. I usually use virtual desktop to connect wirelessly but it doesn’t work with linux. I heard of ALVR but virtual desktop is just too damn good for me to want to use anything else so it would be great if it could work. After that i would really need to understand bottles and wine and whatever windows emulation stuff there is. If it even works for what i’m thinking. Do automatic mods installers even work on linux Let’s say for risk of rain or skyrim? After that there are some softwares i use for work that i might want available on the go like my 3D software sketchup but i’m trying to learn blender rn so maybe i could just get that instead and maybe photoshop and illustrator but i know adobe doesn’t play nice with linux. After all that i guess i would just explore what else i can do with linux. I need to sleep now XD anyways looking forward to whatever i can figure out with all of this either with help or alone.
For Wine, you can mostly just stick to whichever you prefer out of Lutris or Heroic Game Launcher, and it will require little to no tinkering. I don’t mod often, but the ones that allow you to just extract files to a directory have all just worked for me so far. Heroic has a feature where you can run another EXE, like a config tool or a mod in this case, in a given game’s Wine prefix (environment/settings).
If you need windows you’re doing something wrong.
Nice to see more SteamOS systems, hopefully Valve plays it smart and we don’t lose the benefits of the current Steam Deck by having more systems which are wildly more powerful than it. That way developers still have the Steam Deck as a stable target spec wise.
