What’s it called when you’re nostalgic for a time you didn’t live through, like teenagers feeling nostalgic and “looking back” on i.e. the 80s or 90s?
I was born in the 2000s, but somehow I feel a sort of longing to live during the 80s. I have watched a bunch of movies produced during that time, and I realise they may not be a totally realistic depiction of the time period, but for some reason I “miss” the 80s. I don’t mean the struggles of marginalised groups or the politics, but rather the feeling of “old school” and people socialising, the shows playing on TV during that time, the diners, the discotheques, the clubs, the music and fashion and hairstyles… there’s just something cozy about the 80s, how technology wasn’t super developed, how people were still discovering things. Don’t misunderstand me though, I’m glad about the technological advancements we have achieved today, and I realise my image of the 80s may be skewed since I literally didn’t exist during that time, lol.
What’s this feeling called? Has anybody else felt the same way about a time period that isn’t the 2020s?
lived through the 80s. clothing styles were shit. computers were shit. telecommunications were shit. entertainment was shit. socializing wasnt bad but ultimately it was shit. food choices were shit. music was largely shit.

how were the 90’s for you big dawg?
The Simpsons were good then.
You seems to have missed a lot.
And survived. Congratulations. (I managed to get out in one piece as well)
Never noticed, jeans, shirt, sweater when cold, done. (Still same here ;) )
PCs were shit, the rest was pretty neat. (I’m still surprised that PCs and Apples got out and the rest, which was better by miles, didn’t)
That was great. When out of the building, you were free, no trackers, nobody calling when you didn’t want to be available… great. I still leave the phone at home when I’m going out and not off to work.
Battlestar Galactica (or was that the 70s) and ST-TNG, The young ones… OK, the rest was terrible.
Check, but no change there.
Not much improvement, just more.
I liked the music.
Not more the other decades I survived. This one is terrible due to climate issues though.
The climate issues are echos from the 80s… it’s not like this decade is to blame for them.
Alas, nop. 60/70s issue, so even before our (or at least my) time. The ‘earn cash now, clean up later’ economy really took off in rthe 80s and 90s, but has it’s start in the late 60s early 70s.
Unlimited growth in a limited environment… who ever though that such nonsense would work in economics when it has been proven it’s impossible in all other fields.
Sure but the 80s were when we knew as an entire nation that global warming was coming to wreck our shit.
Exxon had an entire team dedicated to energy transition. They had extensive documents proving global warming.
And then they and other oil companies managed to punt the action, scrap their internal teams and bury their heads in the sand because of profits.
The head of every oil company should’ve been brought up in front of the fucking Hague for that shit. Too bad they’re already all dead.
Then I’m curious which nation you are in that denied the issues in the 70s. The 1st UN climate conference was in Stockholm in 1972.
In the capitalisting era, nothing was more important then making money, not even species survival in the (near) future was important enough to allow to rean a few cent less.
Check, this.
Nah, even the current ones can be brought to court, but not only the oil company execs, even governments are to blame. It would be a major improvement when something would be done, instead of still denying something is wrong.
Entertainment was shit?
Back then people absolutely loved going out to ride bikes, skate, swim, play baseball, football, horseshoes, go fishing, whatever floated your boat.
There was way more to entertainment than Pong and Pac-Man…
