I am an old internet user. One of the things that used to drive me nuts was when all these corporate products like Reddit, Twitter, Facebook, Google+, etc. would change their entire UIs on a whim without any user feedback. I am a big fan of the pre-material design language UIs that did not contain any shiny/glossy elements or slow animation effects. Needless to say, UI changes were one of the biggest reasons I stopped using Facebook (before 2015 happened), and stuck with old.reddit.com interface until last month.

It is one of the biggest advantages of fediverse and open source development in general that there are already so many different UI frontends, style scripts, Greasemonkey extensions that one can use for any of the fediverse products based on their liking. Nothing against folks who like “modern” looking UIs, but personally I am not moving away from https://mlmym.org interface for lemmy until something equally simple comes along.
