SAIC brand MG Motor is considering Galicia in northwest Spain as the location for its planned European factory. The decision is expected to be made by the end of September - but other locations are also being considered.
As a Galician I have to say that it would be great for our economy, but I don’t know if everything that it implies at an ecological level and long-term viability makes it a really interesting project.
They want a plant in Europe to produce cars locally, rather than importing them from China, which will soon have pretty high tariffs. The mere fact of not having them be transported across half the globe is great for the environment. Spain isn’t at the top of the EU in terms of green energy percentage, but given how efficient solar energy is here (and the fact that we’re mostly disconnected from the central European grids), it will also be a positive in the medium term. And on top of it all, MG produces electric cars.
The only downside I see here is the reliance on foreign capital.
Yes, I also believe that it can be globally positive for the region, but in any case I am concerned about the “local” environmental consequences, you know, destroying a forest to avoid the burning of fossil fuels can be clearly positive, but if it is not my forest I’m going to be happyer
