Yeah that doesn’t obligatory means that there is some misconfiguration, it’s just slow.

When I try to sub to a community my instance doesn’t know about, well it’s quite the hassle. I guess that when you search for abc@def.com Lemmy will insert that instance somewhere and ping it for information, but not like right away, making it completely invisible.
