  • i make porn

i’ve spent thousands of dollars on camera equipment

i post it online, in 4k, for free, and there’s no way to pay me for the content

i do it because i like the exhibitionism (among other things)

i do it because in the sex-positive communities i prefer to associate with, it’s like posting your day to facebook

i do it because the camera pushes me to imagine new and interesting things to do

i do it because it helps me meet people with similar tastes that aren’t flakey and are equally sex positive and non-judgemental

there’s an enormous amateur community (that often becomes professional) that makes porn because they want to… money is a nice thing to help buy new gear for porn, but it’s not the primary concern

  • as aStonedSanata mentioned, different tech isn’t what we’re talking about: fibre shouldn’t be limited to the speeds of, say ADSL or cable to keep things neutral

what we’re talking about here is, for example, netflix paying your ISP to prioritise traffic to their service over other services… this causes an enormous disadvantage to new startups, because they likely can’t afford to pay a similar fee or even enter into complex agreements with every carrier! in which case, netflix has a better service not because they’re better: just because they’re incumbent

of course these kind of things happen all over the place, but it’s the exact failure of capitalist systems that governments should seek to patch with regulations (like net neutrality) because it’s not good for consumers, the economy, or innovation… which are all the very things that capitalism is meant to promote!

  • probably best not to say “given their initial claim” given that the source is a friend who didn’t say where they’d seen the info

so you may have misinterpreted what they were saying (someone claimed rather than reliable israeli sources claim), they could have misinterpreted what the source was saying, the source could have been exactly like this post and subject to similar accidental misinterpretation, or it could be just straight up misinformation: either accidental or intentional

given the amount of misinformation swirling about the whole situation, i’d probably go with “i had heard” or “i think someone mentioned somewhere” etc

  • activitypub at its core is incredibly simple afaik… its just a set of defined APIs and that follow ActivityStream schemas

the actual user identifiers we interact with in software aren’t the same as what activitypub uses internally (they’re all URIs so look more like https://///)

it wouldn’t be difficult to use a similar mechanism as they’re using right now to direct a particular domain or subdomain to a user ID: it’s all rewritten anyway!

  • the custom algorithms feature and usernames is absolutely the killer features of bsky for me… they’re a really amazing idea!

but not using activitypub is unforgivable imo… i’m sure there will be bridges eventually, but… come on; that shouldn’t be necessary… when you’re trying to shift the entire human population to federated networks, you can’t just break out on your own. is it perfect? no… is it a bare minimum spec that allows you to build on it? absolutely!

  • feeds on bluesky are actually a really cool idea! form what i understand, they’re meant to replace “the algorithm”: people can write and register code to curate posts for feeds, and other people can use those same feeds to filter posts (so the algorithm can be customised per user, open source, etc: it’s a choice… heck, you can have multiple so it’s multiple choices!)

that means it’s less likely someone can manipulate “the algorithm” because there’s no single algorithm! and you can filter your feed based on anything, rather than just simple things like tags
