  • As a hedonist my answer is yes. Life doesn’t have an actual point. It wasn’t “made” on purpose but because it got the chance. What you make of it is your decision but since we have a brain that rewards us and a nociception that punishes us depending on how we use our life I suggest you choose your own purpose. Mine is to be happy. Even when I’m altruistic I’m secretly egoistic because I feel better when my environment feels good too.

  • Is a Gemarkung part of the adress when you have an actual adress like the streetname? Since Schmiechen is a part of the town Schelklingen and Müllergasse being a street might be the next smaller part of the adress I could not imagine that this is the position for the Gemarkung. But I couldn’t figure out what might be between street and part of town. So I searched Spitzacker around Schelklingen and found a page stating it is a “Weiler”. A Weiler is smaller than a Village, usually just a few buildings next to each other and without an own Administration. My guess would be, that osm mentions Spitzacker, because there was said Weiler and as Schmiechen grew it just became a part of Schmiechen. So while there is no actual Spitzacker anymore osm still refers to the historical area because the building might still stand. As of what part of the adress this might be: I don’t think it is a part of the adress. I think osm takes its information from the local cadastral office and they provided all informations including historic areas. The cadastral office is also your goto adress to get docs about areas. In german its called Katasteramt and should be in Schelklingen.

  • All in all nearly 10 year though my last account is 7+ years old and this was the time I actually used the site and didn’t just lurk. My last account isn’t deleted, I just don’t use it anymore. Lemmy at first seemed more complicated, but I stayed for the communication culture and the fediverse concept . I’d love to see lemmy grow to a reddit successor but I doubt it will get this big. Then again I wonder if this isn’t for the positive. Also it is really refreshing not to be suffocated under rage- and clickbait by some malicious algorithm.

  • I think there are three main problems, that aren’t considered properly:

    1. Deep sea mining is not intended and will not replace mining on the surface. If anything we will mine more cheaper and with additional impact on the environment.
    2. The deep sea and the ecological environment remains widely unknown. We could be attacking species we don’t even know and kill animals, that are essential for ecosystems. If we take the nodules we also take the only solid ground in this muddy depths we know so far. Which leads to my third problem -
    3. The amount of time those species need to grow is gigantic. Everything is slower with reduced sunlight, so is growth. You simply can compare the ocean ground with forest in that it takes up to or even more than thousand years (estimated) to regrow. Some squid species need 4 years just to breed their eggs. Microbiology is slowed down just as dramatically. This leads to the assumption that we won’t kill for regrowing, but for good. Deep sea mining robots might cut dead strips into the ocean that will never recover.

I completely understand the economic argument and the worldwide hunger for resources, but money can’t be the final answer and reason for our actions especially when will still don’t use the current resources like we value them.

Also reasoning with environmental issues, like the need of rare elements sounds really counterintuitive considering we “kill ecosystems to protect them?”

If we would really care for the environment we would recycle, but we want this materials cheap and that is the only reason we try to get this working.
