You mean we shouldn’t blindly trust random, almost entirely anonymous, users giving out executables to be run on the very same devices we do banking and important life paperwork on? Say it ain’t so!
That’s rather obvious, but on the other hand Google’s Play Protect should catch malware like this. You have to have an extremely outdated phone not to have Play Protect running on your phone…
I don’t know what happened to Poweramp on your side, but I’ve scanned my copy and nothing gets detected.
Assuming you’re not stupid, the only time you will notice Play Protect is through false positives. You can disable it if you’re smart enough not to install APKs from Telegram, but it’s still a valuable security tool for the general public.
Play Protect won’t take action on that, though. Installed apps will only get purged when Google actually detects a virus.
I’m surprised the Poweramp dev still hasn’t updated their storage API calls, picking one or more directories to play content from has been the norm for two or three years now. I guess it’s a backwards compatibility thing for existing customers?
I think Play Protect does sometimes throw a “installing whatsappro2022crackedbysteve.APK can be dangerous” prompt, but you can just click through that.
Probably. I’ve talked to so many “antivirus is a conspiracy by Big MicroGoogleBook to take away your human rights” people that I no longer assume people saying this stuff are sarcastic.
Basically don’t download apks from telegram.

Or shady websites which promise premium.

The only thing play protect has done “for” me lately was remove file access to Poweramp the day after I got it. Fuck Play Protect.
“it really skips the llama’s ass”

Perhaps, he had that when Poweramp still had that permission. The app itself says Google removed that permission for play edition apps.

i plugged in a random usb stick i found on the ground and got multiple stds, why didnt windows anti virus protect me from this?!
It should, though. SmartScreen should prevent random execution and Windows Defender should warn you about viruses.
Preventing infections is literally the point of all of the security software built into modern operating systems.
That joke kinda sailed over your head there, mate
